We have to start with clarity, however no matter how much clarity we create there is very little that we actually control.

Fancy a quick shot of inspiration? This article is a zippy 2-minute read. But if you’re feeling like a super sleuth wanting to uncover all the secrets, our menu of extra goodies is just the place to dig in!

A message from today’s meditation:

There’s a familiar saying: “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” It captures the essence of our struggle – the desire for control and the inevitability of the unexpected. This week, let’s explore this conundrum with the guidance of Tara Brach, a renowned meditation teacher and psychologist.

As we take a look into our week ahead, here are a few thoughts that we might use to guide us:

“There are some things we can’t choose, but in being present we can choose how we want to relate to them.” – Tara Brach

“Mindfulness is a pause – the space between stimulus and response: that’s where choice lies.” – Tara Brach

“To flourish and keep evolving, we need to know how to make peace with the truth of uncertainty.” – Tara Brach

I like to create clarity for my week ahead. I like to look at what are the ‘known’ things coming up this week and mentally rehearse the outcomes that I would like.

We have to start with clarity. We have to know what we want or else, what would we base our response on even in those moments when we are able to find the space between stimulus and response?

Let me put it in a more descriptive way: if you don’t have a clear idea of where you are sailing to, how will you set your sails, what will you base your decisions on? How will you know to respond when the wind changes? We have to create for ourselves as much clarity as we can.

However no matter how much clarity we create, there is very little that we actually control, and we are always going to be confronted by uncertainty. Is that something that you can make peace with while you are doing your BEST to survive? – that no matter how hard you work and how much you plan, the wind will always be changing and you will always have to keep adjusting your sails?

Without clear intention, we don’t have direction. And without having acceptance of uncertainty, we cannot have peace.

This is my wish for you this week: can you start every day with clarity and clear intent, and can you also put your head on your pillow every night knowing that however the day turned out… is perfect!?

A few thoughts to help you stay on course this week:

  • Start with Clarity. Define your goals and intentions. Where do you want to be at the end of this week? What experiences do you yearn for? Having a clear direction fuels your motivation.
  • Embrace the Pause. Train your mind to observe your thoughts and emotions without judgment. This space between stimulus and response allows for conscious choice.
  • Welcome the Unexpected. View challenges as opportunities for growth. See detours as new adventures. Remember, sometimes the most beautiful destinations are the ones we stumble upon by chance.
  • Let Go of Control. You can’t control the wind, but you can adjust your sails. Accept that some things are simply out of your hands. Focus on what you can control – your thoughts, your actions, and your response to life’s unfolding journey.
  • Find Peace in Every Moment. Regardless of how the day unfolds, there is always something to be grateful for. End your day with a sense of acceptance, acknowledging that every experience, planned or unplanned, contributes to your unique story.

This week, let’s cultivate a relationship with uncertainty. Let’s see it not as a threat, but as an invitation to be present, to be responsive, and ultimately, to find peace within the flow of life.

Wishing you a great week!

A moment of reflection

(If you have the time, use this question as a journal prompt, because whenever you put pen to paper you’re wiring the neural pathways that create your new habits. But if you don’t have the time, just take a moment to reflect on your response.)

Mapping Your Internal Compass: “If you don’t have a clear idea of where you are sailing to, how will you set your sails?” Take a moment to examine your life as if you were a sailor preparing for a significant voyage. What is your true destination—not just in terms of external achievements, but in terms of who you want to become and how you want to feel? Write about the difference between the goals you think you should have versus the deep yearnings that actually move your soul.

Explore this question: When you strip away societal expectations and others’ opinions, what clarity emerges about your authentic path? How might this deeper understanding change the way you approach your daily decisions and responses to unexpected challenges?

Q&A for deeper learning

Q1: How can I plan effectively if I need to accept that I can’t control outcomes?

A: Planning and acceptance aren’t contradictory—they’re complementary. Think of planning as setting your intention and preparing your tools, while acceptance means staying flexible about how your goals manifest. Create clear intentions for what you want to experience and achieve, but hold those plans lightly. Your clarity gives you direction; your acceptance gives you peace when the path looks different than expected.

Q2: What if embracing uncertainty makes me feel like I’m giving up on my dreams?

A: Embracing uncertainty actually empowers your dreams by freeing you from the exhausting burden of trying to control every detail. When you accept that you can’t control outcomes, you can focus your energy on what you can control: your effort, your response to challenges, and your commitment to growth. Many people discover that their dreams manifest in even more beautiful ways than they originally imagined when they stop forcing specific outcomes.

Q3: How do I find that “pause” between stimulus and response when I’m feeling overwhelmed or triggered?

A: Start small and be patient with yourself. The pause doesn’t have to be long—even a single conscious breath can create space for choice. Practice this skill during calm moments so it becomes more accessible during challenging ones. You might use a simple phrase like “Let me breathe before I respond” or develop a physical cue like placing your hand on your heart. Remember, this is a practice, not a perfection.

Q4: What does it mean to “make peace with uncertainty” without becoming passive or careless?

A: Making peace with uncertainty means accepting that change and unpredictability are natural parts of life, not problems to be solved. This doesn’t make you passive—it makes you more skillfully responsive. You still plan, prepare, and act with intention, but you do so with an open hand rather than a clenched fist. You remain fully engaged while releasing attachment to specific outcomes.

Q5: How can I end each day feeling like “everything was perfect” when some days are genuinely difficult or painful?

A: “Perfect” doesn’t mean pleasant or easy—it means complete and necessary for your growth. Even difficult days contribute to your wisdom, resilience, and compassion. This perspective shift takes practice. Try asking yourself: “What did this day teach me?” or “How did today’s challenges help me grow?” This doesn’t minimize real pain, but it honors how every experience shapes who you’re becoming.

Q6: I struggle with anxiety about the future. How does this approach help with worry and fear?

A: Anxiety often stems from trying to control things beyond our influence. This approach reduces anxiety by clearly distinguishing between what you can and cannot control. Focus your mental energy on your current choices and responses rather than imaginary future scenarios. When worry arises, return to the present moment and ask: “What can I actually do right now?” This redirects anxious energy into purposeful action.

Q7: How do I maintain hope and motivation when I accept that so much is beyond my control?

A: True hope isn’t dependent on controlling outcomes—it’s rooted in trusting your ability to navigate whatever comes. When you accept uncertainty, you discover that your resilience and capacity for growth are far greater than you imagined. Motivation shifts from forcing specific results to embracing the adventure of conscious living. You become excited about who you’re becoming through the process, not just what you might achieve at the end.
